David and Peter MacLean have been in business together for over 20 years. During
this time they have turned their talent for working with wood toward custom millwork,
furniture design and construction, as well as design and production of unique, functional
items for the kitchen and home.
Critical to the production process of every object of the MacLean Brothers is the
emphasis they place on crafting each piece to show the inherent beauty of the wood. This
ultimately produces objects that are functional, affordable, and a pleasure to use.
All products are made of Bird's-Eye Maple. The distinctive figure of Bird's-eye
Maple is actually a defect found in the growth pattern of rock or sugar maple. The cause is
unknown although research is ongoing in an effort to reproduce this extremely rare and
highly prized hardwood. Is the bird's-eye characteristic due to bacteria, fungus, virus or
other factors? To date all experimental work has proved inconclusive. Nature continues to
hide her secrets well.
Sugar maple is native to the Acadian and Great Lake/St.
Lawrence Forest Regions of North
America. The bird's-eye formation can occur where ever sugar maple grows but is found most
frequently in harsh northern growing conditions, often in deformed trees. This perfectly
describes the hardwood forests of Nova Scotia!
All wood used in products is carefully selected and comes from the sustainable
woodlots of Nova Scotia.
